Committee and Staff Bios
Julian Zimlich, Program Director
Julian has been the Program Director for the George Pocock Rowing Foundation since 2005 where she has worked diligently to increase access to rowing for community members who otherwise would not be able to participate.
Directed by ten years of professional experience in non-profit program development and administration and a Bachelors degree in Experiential Education, Julian has a lengthy history creating programs that utilize recreational activities and sports such as rowing as vehicles to deliver opportunities for broader life experience, achievement, and reflection to young people as well as the young at heart. Julian is dedicated to creating targeted programs that directly speak to the needs and assets of specific populations and communities. |

Julian grew up playing in Lake Washington and Puget Sound, yet she has worked with programs all over North America. She has worked to create or expand many programs for organizations including Outward Bound (National), Passages Northwest (WA), Girl Ventures (CA), Food Works (OR), Salish Sea Expeditions (WA), The Pomegranate Center (WA), and The Northwest Maritime Center and Wooden Boat Foundation (WA). Julian is a Wilderness EMT, program facilitator and experienced guide and can also be found working with Jefferson County Search and Rescue, practicing Taiko with the Seattle Kokon Taiko Apprenticeship program, or playing with the ORCA master’s swim team. Julian is a former Mt Baker Junior, Junior National Team and Cal Berkeley rower and has coached for various West Coast teams since 1994.
Penny Lewis, Committee Chair
Officially retired since 2003, Penny remains a tireless leader and community volunteer for the citizens of Seattle. Her many affiliations include membership in the Central Area School Council, the Broadmoor-Washington Park Guild of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and as co-founder and captain of the Martha’s Mom’s rowing team. Penny has been a board member of the Lakeside School, Seattle General Hospital, and the US Rowing Association. Additionally, Penny has held many roles with the Pocock Foundation Board since 1986: President, Vice President, Chair of the Development Committee, and now Chair of the Outreach Committee and member of the organizing committee for Row for the Cure. |

Penny holds a degree in Nursing (BSN - Columbia) as well as a Certificate in Fundraising Management from the University of Washington. Penny’s Professional experience includes work as the Director of Development for the Arboretum Foundation(1999-2004), Associate Director of Development and Capital Campaign Manager for The Overlake School (1993-1999), the Creator and Manager of Packaging Specialties (1989-1992), a Consultant for the Famous Pacific Dessert Company (1985), the Creator and Manager of The Cathedral Shop (1979-1983) and as a Physician’s Assistant for Dr. Graham Clark, Eye Institute at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center (1963-1965).
Sara Lopez, Committee Member
Sara has been involved with rowing as a collegiate athlete, coach, regatta organizer, association manager, club administrator, and coach since 1980. Her involvement includes 12 years on the staff of US Rowing, serving as the Assistant Competition Manager for the Atlanta Olympic Games, and over 15 years coaching Conibear Rowing Club in Seattle. She has previously served on the US Rowing Board of Directors and the Board of Directors for the George Pocock Rowing Foundation. Sara has a background in adaptive physical education and has worked with rowing programs for athletes with developmental and physical disabilities. Administrator for the Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership masters degree program. |

Her community involvement includes participation on the GPRF Outreach Committee and the Advisory Board for the UW DO-IT program which serves college-bound high school students with disabilities. She also serves as instructor and mentor coach with the US Rowing Coaching Certification program. Sara completed her collegiate rowing and undergraduate work in physical education and special education at Pacific Lutheran University. She has a masters degree in education from the University of Washington.
Dave Miller, Committee Member
A native of Detroit, Dave began his rowing career at Michigan State University in 1988. In 1992, Dave moved to the Washington, DC area to continue his training and to work with the Organization for Anacostia Rowing and Sculling (O.A.R.S), whose mission is to introduce local underserved youth to the sport. While serving as an O.A.R.S. board member, Dave remained active in the larger rowing community by coaching several high school, college, masters, and adaptive rowing programs. In his work with athletes, Dave has always focused on confronting issues of gender, race, and socioeconomic differences. As a licensed US Rowing official since 1994, Dave has officiated many Regional and National regattas including the 2004 US Olympic Trials. Currently coaching at Lakeside School, Dave is excited to be member of the Pocock Access Committee. Dave lives with his wife, Amy, on their boat, RECESS. |

Dave Anderson, Committee Member
By day, Dave is a Private Client Advisor and Senior Vice President for U.S. Trust and Bank of America Private Wealth Management. By night, at least on Wednesday's during the summer, he is a volunteer rowing coach for a Pocock Foundation sponsored outreach program between the Seattle Parks and Recreation's Special Populations Rowing Team for adults with Developmental and physical disabilities and Lake Union Crew. An all-time favorite of his rowers, Dave is a patient and committed coach and is looking forward to his third season on the water with Special Pops.
This year, Dave has joined our Access committee bringing tons of experience in corporate relations and great ideas and support for the new Access Rowing Team.

Jabali Stewart, Committee Member
Jabali comes to the Access Committee after two summers of working with the Lakeside Education and Enrichment Program (LEEP) as a classroom teacher. LEEP is a six week intensive intellectual, athletic, social, and leadership program for 8th graders going into the 9th grade. As a former rower at Ohio State University, Jabali knows firsthand the value and life lessons crew can deliver and was instrumental in engaging his students in the sport during our summer rowing program with their young people.
Jabali is now the full-time LEEP Coordinator for the Lakeside School and will be coordinating the development and implementation of all academic and rowing aspects of the program. Jabali volunteers with the GPRF Access Committee in efforts to create future partnership opportunities for our two organizations as well as ongoing life opportunities for graduates of the LEEP program. As both an educator and an administrator, Jabali brings significant experience working in the Seattle Youth Development community. |

Jabali has a B.A. in religious Studies from the Ohio State University, a Master's in Ethnomusicology and is finishing his Docterate in Ethnomusicology at the University of Washington. He is also a university instructor in Ethnomusicology and other related fields.
Judy Ogliore, Committee Member
Inspired by the opportunity to help develop the Access Rowing Team, Judy Joined the Access Committee in 2008. Judy finds great joy in committing herself to organizations that she believes in. She spent 17 years supporting PTSA in every possible position at least once, including a stint on the State Council though she now prefers to spend her time at the grass roots level. Judy's professional life is spent working for the Department of Health and Human Services of the Federal government. She works with the tribes of Washington and Idaho administering their Financial Assistance Programs. She particularly enjoys the opportunity this work provides her to experience culture and its great importance to Tribal Life. |

Her work with low-income grantees makes her all too aware of the barriers that many deal with on a daily basis, and she enjoys using her experience to confront these issues in our community. Judy has a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree in Business from the University of Washington.
As for rowing, Judy has participated in both Seattle's Parks Department programs and private programs. During her rowing career she spent 6 years directing an outreach program which gave her a great deal of experience discovering the challenges and barriers that many individuals experience. We understand that she is also an invaluable Volunteer for the Pocock Rowing Center.
