Seattle Rower Wins Fifth Consecutive World Indoor Rowing Championship

BOSTON, MA (February 25, 2007) – Luanne Mills of Seattle won her fifth consecutive world indoor rowing title on Sunday at the CRASH-B World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston.

Mills, 68, won the women’s lightweight veteran B division (ages 65-69) with a time of 8:11.5 over 2,000 meters. Mills, who rows for Seattle’s Pocock Rowing Center, led the entire race and finished more then two minutes ahead of second place finisher Lynn Haney of Guilford, CT.

“Between 1,200 and 1,500 meters you start thinking ‘why am I doing this?’, but then you get close to the end and you know you can do it,” said Mills. “When it’s over it feels good. It was a great race and a wonderful experience.”

Mills is a retired Seattle school teacher who started rowing at age 46.

Held annually since 1981, the CRASH-B World Indoor Rowing Championships draws more than 1,500 competitors from around the world. This year’s race was held at Boston University’s Agganis Arena.
