Pocock’s Meyer and Hanson
win top awards
at the 2007 Northwest Rowing Awards
SEATTLE, WA (Feb. 17, 2007) – Pocock Rowing Center’s Lindsay Meyer, who this summer became the first female sculler in U.S. history to medal at a junior world championships, was named Northwest Competitor of the Year at the annual Northwest Rowing Awards dinner in Seattle.
Meyer, 17, was named the Northwest Competitor of the Year for her bronze medal performance in the women’s single sculls at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Amsterdam this August. Meyer became the first U.S. single sculler, male or female, to win a medal at the junior world championships since 1976.
Earlier in the year, Meyer brought home gold medals from the USRowing National Championships, USRowing National Youth Invitational, and placed 10th among U.S. elite scullers at the USRowing National Selection Regatta.
Pocock Rowing Center’s Hans-Peder Hanson was named Northwest Coach of the Year. Hanson, a Ph.D. candidate in Latin and Greek studies at the University of Washington, coached the Seattle Yacht Club and Ancient Mariners Rowing Club’s to age-category wins at Boston’s Head of the Charles Regatta.
Other winners were: Contributors of the Year Jason Frisk and Peggy Tosdale, for their role in organizing the USRowing National Championships in Seattle this August. Frisk and Tosdale are directors of the Seattle Parks and Recreation rowing programs at the Green Lake Small Craft Center and Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center.
